Why see a dietitian?

In Australia, dietitians complete a minimum of four-years in an undergraduate Nutrition & Dietetics degree at university. During this degree we study all things about your digestive system, metabolism and the science of food. 
To become an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), the university course one does must be through a course that has been accredited by Dietitians Australia (DA), the regulatory body for dietetic practice in Australia. 

APDs are qualified to provide individualised, evidence-based nutrition advice and practice medical nutrition therapy. This means that any time a medical condition requires nutrition input, an APD is the best-qualified person to see.

In addition to our initial qualifications, APDs are also required to maintain a high standard of ongoing professional development  each year to remain accredited. This ensures dietitians are always up to date with the most recent research and evidence in the field of nutrition. 

APD is the only nutrition credential recognised by Medicare and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) and private health insurers. Therefore patients/clients may be eligible for rebates or potentially even completely covered for consultations depending on their level of cover.
